Pin-Up
Prints by Art Frahm:
Art Frahm
(1907-1981) was a Pin-Up Artist from Chicago who was active from
the 1940s to the 1960s. Commercially
successful during his lifetime, his art ranged from magazine
cover illustrations and advertising (including work for
Coca-Cola and Coppertone) to humorous hobo themed calendar paintings.
Many of his Pin-Up works were outstanding
examples of the glamour genre. His perfectly coifed, daringly
dressed beauties rivaled the work of Elvgren or
Ballantyne. Today, however, he is best known as the originator
of the "Ladies in Distress" genre of Pin-Up,
based on images he created for the Joseph C. Hoover & Sons
calendar company. The notable characteristics
of these paintings involve beautiful young women whose panties
mysteriously flutter to the ground in public
situations. Leering men and laughing women are prevalent in the
background as well as a bag of groceries clutched
dearly by the embarrassed subject. In one of Frahm's trademark
idiosyncratic touches, celery is often depicted. |
