Say It Loud!
A Tribute to Blaxploitation History & Cinema
- Group Exhibit -
Blaxploitation is a fascinating genre of cinema. The
films can be campy, exciting, innovative, odd, and empowering
(and
sometimes all at once!). When I first met the late Gidget Gein
(1969 - 2008), he was one of the most talked about underground
artists in LA and we immediately bonded over these movies. Gidget
was the original bassist, songwriter, and co-creator of
Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids. His influence shaped their
initial look and sound, solidifying his place in music history.
It has been said by many sources that his original watercolor
artwork also influenced a certain Mr. Manson, as well.
Back in 2006, Gidget was working with Darius James (author of
Negrophobia and That's Blaxploitation) on a series of pieces
revolving around the history of Blaxploitation. The series covered
the evolution of the genre, from early minstrel shows, to radio,
through cinema, and into television sitcoms. We hosted our first
exibit of Gidget's artwork that year with his breakthrough
"Back In Blackface" show.
Our current exhibit, "Say It Loud!" offers a chance
to revisit that first exhibit, with several pieces omitted from
the original show
as well as a few paintings from the archives which haven't been
seen in almost a decade! To round out the show, we invited four
incredible artists (Lou Rusconi, Chris Mann, Adam Padilla, and
Nicolas Caesar) who also love the Blaxploitation genre to join
us on the walls. This is a fun, sincere, but by no means all-encompassing
exploration of our topic. Can you dig it?!? |
